Korea Zinc, Collaborating With Taesung and Neo Battery To Commercialize 'Composite Copper Foil'

(Seoul=NSP NEWS) = Korea Zinc is teaming up with Taesung and Neo Battery Materials Korea to commercialize composite copper foil, a next-generation cathode collector gaining attention, and is now fully entering the battery material market for small mobility applications.

On January 28th, Korea Zinc signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) at its Onsan Refinery to develop high-performance battery technology using composite copper foil for drones and robots. The two companies agreed to establish a full-cycle collaborative system, encompassing material development and prototype verification. This collaboration is a stepping stone to proactively secure core battery material technology to address the rapidly growing small mobility market, including drones and humanoid robots.

Composite copper foil is a core material featuring a polymer core, making it lighter than conventional copper foil while offering high energy density and fire safety. It is particularly regarded as an essential material for next-generation high-performance batteries as it mitigates expansion issues that occur when using silicon anodes. The three companies plan to conduct a demonstration of small mobility vehicles equipped with composite copper foil by the end of this year, following material optimization and battery cell performance evaluation.

Korea Zinc plans to maximize synergy by combining its own copper resources and copper foil manufacturing facilities with the equipment and cell manufacturing technologies of its partners. This strategy aims to secure a unique technological edge in the global composite copper foil market, which is expected to grow to approximately $10.1 billion by 2032.
