POSCO FUTURE M, Developing ‘Advanced Battery Material Technology’ Through Agreement with US-based Sila

(Seoul=NSP NEWS) = POSCO Future M is embarking on the development of advanced battery material technology by combining its own anode and cathode material technologies with the silicon cathode material technology of Sila, a U.S. company.

POSCO Future M plans to further advance its advanced battery material technology by combining its anode and cathode technology with Sila’s silicon cathode technology through a Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) with Sila of the United States on March 11.

Silicon anode materials have an energy storage capacity up to 10 times higher than conventional graphite-based anode materials, which can significantly increase the driving range of electric vehicles and drastically reduce charging time.

Sila is a battery materials company headquartered in California, USA, possessing high-performance silicon anode technology. It collaborates with major automakers and battery manufacturers to improve electric vehicle driving range and reduce charging speeds, and operates a silicon anode production plant in Moses Lake, Washington.

The two companies expect that by utilizing carbon nanomaterial technology, they can significantly extend battery life by suppressing volume expansion during charging and discharging which has been pointed out as a weakness of silicon anode materials and preventing structural deformation.

In addition, the company plans to explore ways to utilize POSCO Future M’s carbon material technology to improve the cost competitiveness of high-priced silicon anode materials.

The head of POSCO Future M’s R&D Center stated, “Both companies have decided to combine their respective industry-leading technological leadership to develop advanced battery material technology,” adding, “We will continuously expand our partnership not only in technology development but also at the supply chain level.”
