(서울=NSP통신) 권글샘 기자 = Current Account Surplus of $7.18 Billion in February... 22 Consecutive Months of Surplus

For February 2025, the Korean current account registered a surplus of 7.18 billion dollars, marking a 22-month consecutive surplus, which is the third-longest streak since the 2000s. Although semiconductor exports declined, the continued growth in IT exports and the shift in non-IT exports to positive growth contributed to this surplus.

However, the economic uncertainty for South Korea is expected to persist longer than initially anticipated, due to the trade tariffs announced by the United States and subsequent retaliatory tariffs from China.

According to the Bank of Korea's 'Balance of Payments during February 2025 (preliminary)', the current account surplus for February reached $7.18 billion.

This marks the 22nd consecutive month of surplus, making it the third-longest streak of continuous surpluses since the 2000s.

The surplus was driven by the balance of goods. In February, the goods balance recorded a surplus of $8.18 billion. Exports totaled $53.79 billion, showing a 3.6% increase YOY.

Although semiconductor exports fell by 2.5%, the growth in IT items such as computers (28.5%) and ICT equipment (17.5%) continued, and non-IT items such as automobiles (18.8%) and pharmaceuticals (28.1%) also showed an increase. Imports also saw an increase, rising by 1.3% compared to the previous month, totaling $45.61 billion.

Regionally, exports to Southeast Asia and the United States increased by 9.2% and 1.0%, respectively, while exports to China and Japan decreased by 1.4% and 4.8%, respectively.
